Lying down, half asleep and feeling good, his mind wandered restless here and there, present and past, until it got around to his Nikki and settled down and spun him a golden memory.
He had gone to an art show with his regular crew—one of them had received the invite—and had reached that point when he decided to slip off and be away. It had been a nice party so far; nice people dressed smartly making clever statements about this and that, Vivion himself being a major perpetrator.
Still as usual, bottom line, he was bored to the marrow in his bones. So, well into his disappearing routine, he had already wandered into various rooms and areas, gradually distancing himself from the crew. He was now eyeing a hallway that led to the house’s front door, his Exit destination. In between, there was one open door from which came the buzz of cheery party chatter.
Vivion decided. Three long steps and he’d swift past it and be out through the front door in a blink.
Just then through the buzzing doorway came two women—although only one was really there and mattered. She was tall and shapely, her skin the color of dusk lightened by sunset’s glow. Her face was a happy place, vibrant, on the brink of a smile. Maybe what she was thinking, her eyes twinkled with delight, looking everywhere, seeking for fun. She wore a brief pale blue thing that bared her shoulders and navel, in which there sparkled a gem. The pants were a navy blue skin-tight hip-hugging tissue with white lace trim at the ankles. Her open-toed sandals were golden, her toenails silvered. She was a beautiful genie fresh out the bottle, and her bouquet as she walked past him was a splendid confusion with hints of nutmeg and coriander and orange blossoms.
In a word, absolutely, stunningly, marvelous!
As their eyes made four, Vivion gushed, “Forgive me, Miss Angel, but would you care to be part of my enduring heart program?”
Her eyes narrowed for a moment and the space between them sprouted tiny puckers which were swiftly gone as puzzlement departed and her face was again just lovely. She went on her way without a word.
Then Vivion lost his poise when, with a lazy graceful twist of torso, she cast back at him an amused, superior look. All at once trite and foolish, his clever comebacks turned tail and deserted. Still, compelled to respond, make some sort of approach, he pushed his way through people to catch up with her. Then from off to the left, near the bar, a voice called out, “Shani! Shani!” and she turned, looked that way and started towards a smiling Indian fellow in a black business suit that seemed out of place.
Yet Mr. Business Suit was a better-favored man than Vivion; he knew this daydream on a first name basis.
Vivion watched as they bussed each other on both cheeks European style, waited a half a minute more as they exchanged whatevers, then he approached, stuck his hand out and said to the fellow, “Hi, man.
